Songs That Sample 2010s Music
In today’s ever-evolving music landscape, the trend of sampling continues to thrive, with modern artists pulling inspiration from iconic tracks.
Interestingly, a new phenomenon is emerging: the use of songs from the 2010s as a foundation for fresh sounds. While the 2010s feel recent, they’ve already begun shaping today’s music through inventive sampling.
This post continues our samples series, looking at the practice of sampling decade by decade.
Take Katy Perry’s “Never Really Over” for example, which borrows the infectious chorus from Dagny’s “Love You Like That” (2017), seamlessly blending Perry’s pop style with Dagny’s indie sound.
Not far behind, A1 x J1’s “Night Away (Dance)” feat. Tion Wayne samples Jennifer Lopez‘s 2011 smash “On the Floor” featuring Pitbull. By repurposing this dance anthem, the song taps into early 2010s party vibes, giving listeners a sense of nostalgia while introducing fresh beats.
Even superstar Kendrick Lamar dipped into 2010s gold, sampling Bruno Mars’ “24K Magic” (2016) for his song “LOYALTY.” featuring Rihanna. The combination of Bruno’s funky groove and Kendrick’s sharp lyricism results in a masterclass of genre fusion.
However, we’re only beginning to see a wave of songs sampling from the 2010s. Given how recent these tracks are, artists often hesitate to pull from such a recent era, preferring to mine older decades for hidden gems. But as time passes, more hits from the 2010s are likely to find their way into modern music, whether through subtle interpolation or full-blown samples.
In the meantime, tracks like Alesso’s “Cool”, which uses Kylie Minogue’s “Get Outta My Way” (2010), and Nicki Minaj’s “Are You Gone Already”, which samples Billie Eilish‘s “when the party’s over” (2018), remind us that the 2010s are already making their mark on the next generation of music.
Sampling from the 2010s isn’t just about recycling old sounds—it’s about artists honoring recent hits and making them feel fresh again. As more creators explore the vibrant pop, EDM, and R&B landscapes of the last decade, we’re sure to hear even more songs influenced by the defining sounds of the 2010s.
