Song Titles in Lowercase
Over the past decade, we’ve observed a growing trend in the use of lowercase letters in song and album titles.
Ariana Grande delivered her “sweetener” album in 2018. Billie Eilish’s debut album was stylized in all caps, but then songs like “bad guy” and “you should see me in a crown” were all stylized in lower case. Taylor Swift’s lockdown albums “folklore” and “evermore” came out with their entire track listings in lowercase.
What does this tell us? On the one hand, the spelling gives an understated aura to the music. In a world where over 100,000 songs are uploaded to Spotify daily, artists try to attract as much attention to their music as they can. Lowercase lettering takes the opposite approach: instead of saying “listen to me”, it says “you can listen to me if you want, but I don’t mind if you don’t.”
On the other hand, online discourse shows that many listeners find the usage of lowercase from the likes of Olivia Rodrigo and Billie Eilish to be superficial and annoying.
What do you think? Are lowercase song titles an attempt at authenticity, or will it become a lasting feature in pop music?
Either way, we’ll be listening:
